you to a public working assembly around the issues that are at the core
of the group’s mission - exposing instances of abuse, corruption and
exploitation in the art world. This is the official public launch of our
platform, which began to operate in
Septe<span>mber 2011, and will be followed by a series of debates and
workshops in the near future. These present a unique opportunity to
engage more directly with conditions of cultural work that affect not
only artists but creative workers in general: those from the
traditionally creative fields as well as those generally involved in
cultural production.</span><span> </span><br />
<br /><span>Members of ArtLeaks will present on the problematic politics
of sponsorship in contemporary culture, the intense exploitation of
cultural labor, the marketization of public space dedicated to so-called
independent initiatives, the appropriation of culture under the
umbrella of disreputable corporation and last but not least, what
possibilities we may envision for transversal alliances and activism
against cases of abuse and corruption of cultural
managers and institutions.</span><span> </span><br /><br /><span>We invite
to the discussion all those of you who have experienced abuses of your
basic rights to be paid for your work, those who have struggled against
subjugation under the dictates of galleries who cater to a wealthy
minority, those who regularly take on other jobs to finance projects
that may never be realized. Join us in forwarding the conversation from a
critique of the status quo to formulating strategies on how to make
real changes in the system – changes that would benefit the vast
majority of creative workers, allowing them to unleash their full
potential to bringing about a better world.</span><span> </span><br />
<br /><span>To this end, the evening will be divided between a first part
dedicated to interventions by
members of ArtLeaks, while in the second we would like to engage the
public in a conversation and brainstorm on solutions, models and
positions in response to concrete problems, concerns, urgencies.</span><span> </span><br />
<br /><span>Currently ArtLeaks is working on formulating a new regular
publication entirely dedicated to issues of cultural workers’ rights and
related struggles. This journal will be unique in focusing specifically
on the challenges we face in the field today, related to wide-spread
mistreatment, (self)exploitation and corruption and how these may be
over-come through strategies of self-organization, solidarity and
collective action. ArtLeaks will launch a call for papers at this public

Iosif Király, Dan Mihaltianu) prezinta pentru prima oara impreuna o
vasta selectie de lucrari conceptuale ce acopera intregul parcurs
artistic al grupului, de la infiintarea sa in vara anului 1990 si pina
in prezent.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: small;"><span lang="IT">Fondat de <span lang="IT">Călin </span>Dan
(istoric de arta la acea vreme) si Dan Mihaltianu (artist), carora li
se va alatura la scurt timp si Iosif Király (arhitect la origine si
fotograf), “grupul de actiune” a aparut ca o consecinta a schimbarilor
politice din 1989 pentru a “exorciza reziduurile deceniilor de opresiune
comunista”. <br />
</span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span lang="IT"><br />Combinind instalatia cu elementele formale ale performance-ului si actionismului, lucrarile din perioada 1990-1992 (<i>East-West Avenue</i>, <i>Alimentara, Je t’aime, moi non plus ....)</i>
inventariaza vizual ramasitele perioadei comuniste oficial incheiate,
relevind un complex fond comun, manifest la acea vreme (si mult timp
dupa) in lumea artistica, in cea politica si in societate in general.
Aparuta ca o reactie la cliseele din presa occidentala referitoare la
Romania anilor ‘90, dar si la discursul nationalist autohton, seria <i>Draculaland</i>
(1993-1995) a combinat fictiunea si realitatea prin folosirea unor
surse multi-culturale si personale, in instalatii complexe ce abundau in
referinte ironice si asocieri cinice. “Desi hibridizarea Vlad
Tepes/Dracula si Mona Lisa a fost un gest spontan, aceasta a cautat
instinctiv
simplificarea relatiei noastre cu o cultura problematica in ceea ce
priveste relationarea sa <<regionala>> (Central/Est/Balcanic
Europeana) altfel decit in termenii exotismului”.</regionala></span> <span lang="IT">In anul 1993 Dan Mihaltianu paraseste grupul optind pentru o cariera artistica individuala.<br />
</span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span lang="IT"><br />Rezidenta
de un an la Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (1995-1996) marcheaza pentru
duo-ul subREAL inceputul unei noi etape, distantarea de cotidianul
romanesc permitindu-le<span> </span>inceperea seriei de lucrari <i>Art History Archive </i>(<i>Arhiva de istoria artei</i>).
18 lazi cu material fotografic abandonat de UAP in urma desfiintarii
revistei «Arta» - care a controlat imaginea publica a artei locale intre
1953-1990 – ajung la Berlin, unde initial formeaza o sculptura dinamica
prin acoperirea peretilor si tavanului spatiului de rezidenta cu
reproduceri a/n de diferite dimensiuni. Aceasta introducere in forta
este urmata de un sir de evenimente, instalatii si performante avand ca
centru conceptual fotografia de presă artistica. Urmeaza seria <i>Serving Art </i>(1997-1999),
unde o serie de negative ale unor fotografii de
reproducere erau deconstruite in instalatii ce recuperau universul
aural din jurul obiectului artistic – obiecte, personaje, evenimente –
urmarind teme ca: interactiunea intre cultura si politica; fotografia
punte intre sfera publica cu cea privata; inocenta ambigua a aparatului
de fotografiat; participare sociala versus conventie sociala, etc.<br />
</span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span lang="IT"><br />In seria <i>Interviewing the Cities</i>
inceputa la Viena in anul 1999, “servitorii artei”, personajele
marginale care indeplineau ritualul prezentarii operei de arta sint
inlocuite de membrii grupului. Reconstituirea cadrelor din arhiva are
loc de aceasta data cu un dublu scop: sa analizeze pe cateva nivele
realitatile artistice din diverse orase; sa articuleze un jurnal
subiectiv al relatiilor noastre cu oameni si locuri. “Proiectul se
construieste din trei cicluri de fotografii inscenate: portrete produse
in colaborare cu membrii comunitatilor artistice locale; interviuri cu
monumentele de spatiu public; perspective citadine realizate in <i>trompe l’oeil</i>, pentru a sublinia caracterul artificial al urbanismului si buna sa colaborare cu turismul si mass-media”. <br />
</span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span lang="IT"></span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span lang="IT"></span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span lang="IT"><br />
subREAL este primul grup cu adevarat international venit din Romania
dupa 1989. Apartinind unei generatii de tranzitie, membrii grupului au
facut primii pasi pentru a stabili un discurs cu arta occidentala,
transformind cultura inchisa din care proveneau intr-una deschisa. Au
initiat proiecte curatoriale ca <i>Sexul lui Mozart</i> (1991, Artexpo, Bucuresti) sau <i>Nomadic</i> (1994, Bienala de la Sao Paolo) si<i> </i>au
participat la evenimente internationale majore: Bienala de la Istanbul,
Manifesta 1 Kunsthal Rotterdam (1996), Berlin Biennale (1998), Bienala
de la Venetia - Aperto (1993) si in Pavilionul Romaniei (1999). </span>Au
expus la Museum of Contemporary Art din Chicago (1995), Neuer Berliner
Kunstverein (1996), Institute of Contemporary Art din Philadelphia
(1996), Akademie Schloss Solitude (1998) etc. </span></div>

straight but it does not mean queer. It has a particular meaning that
allows us to use it in a rather "wide" sense. And of course, also in a

STRÂMBE practice and program wants to performatively address and push
forms and issues that are fragile or tense in Romanian society but not
only. From the racial issues to gender questions, from the new
bio-religious demands to politics of representation. However ZILELE
STRÂMBE do not aim to double the existing activist activity. It rather
wants to push limits, mix forms and bring forward discourses and art
projects that address certain tensions. It is for the moment our most
important project. One that we find urgent. One that is missing. One
that brings together speech, representation, text and discourse. </span></div>

Infiintat in 2004, CNDB este rezultatul unei indelungi campanii de sensibilizare, sustinute de artisti si de sectorul cultural neguvernamental din domeniul dansului. </span></span><span class="apple-style-span"><span style="font-size: 10pt;">Statutul sau de institutie de spectacole, dar si de finantator al coregrafiei contemporane face din CNDB o institutie singulara si vitala pentru dezvoltarea culturii coregrafice din Romania. De la inceputurile sale CNDB a fost un spatiu care a gazduit spectacole, a finantat productii, a lansat concursuri de proiecte pentru artisti din zone culturale diferite, a lansat dezbateri, a sustinut ateliere de formare si proiecte educationale, a invitat artisti din strainatate. </span></span><span style="font-size: 10pt;"><br /><br /><span class="apple-style-span">Incepand din 2008, CNDB se afla in pericol de a fi evacuat ca urmare a lucrarilor de reconsolidare ce trebuie sa înceapa la cladirea Teatrului National. Desi institutia a facut demersuri pe langa Ministerul Culturii si Patrimoniului National in favoarea gasirii unor solutii si a unui nou spatiu, nici una dintre acestea nu s-a concretizat pana in prezent. CNDB a primit in 27 decembrie 2010 din partea conducerii Teatrului National o scrisoare de informare cu privire la faptul ca lucrarile de reconsolidare vor incepe in ianuarie 2011 si sunt „incompatibile cu desfasurarea activitatii Centrului National al Dansului in spatiul ocupat in prezentâ€. Prin aceasta adresa, institutia este practic somata sa-si suspende activitatea si sa anuleze evenimentele si proiectele programate pentru anul 2011. </span><br /><br /><span class="apple-style-span">Èšinand cont de reducerea drastica a bugetului CNDB in ultimii ani si de inexistenta unei solutii prin care dansul contemporan sa beneficieze in continuare de o sala de spectacole si de studiouri de dans, dupa 5 ani de activitate, dansatorii si coregrafii se afla din nou in aceeasi situatie de provizorat ca la începutul anilor 2000. Proiectul doreste sa concentreze eforturile, preocuparile si competentele privind studiul si intelegerea orasului provenind din arii diferite si a caror intersectare a fost pina acum mai putin evidenta. Scopul acestuia este de a deveni o platforma de dezbatere si interactiune intre domenii, transgresind limitele disciplinare (arte, arhitectura, urbanism, sociologie si antropologie urbana, geografie urbana, literatura, studii politice).<br /><br />Primul eveniment CitiesMethodologies a avut loc in mai 2009 la Londra, conceptul fiind dezvoltat de prof. Ger Duijzings, Co-Director al UCL Urban Laboratory si specialist in antropologie Est-Europeana in cadrul SSEES (School of Slavonic and East European Studies). Datorita succesului editiei din 2009, University College London a decis transformarea evenimentului in editie anuala, intre 5-7 mai 2010 avind loc in cadrul Urban Laboratory a doua editie a CitiesMethodologies.<br /><br /><br />CitiesMethodologies | Bucharest este compus din:<br /><br />1. Expozitia CitiesMethodologies (CME)<br /><br />In ultima decada orasul a devenit teren de cercetare pentru multe proiecte din zona artei contemporane iar aceasta expozitie a fost un bun prilej sa reunim artisti preocupati de aceasta tema si de aspectele sociale, culturale, politice ce modeleaza contextul urban. Fie ca sunt fotografii, instalatii vizuale / audio, filme video sau documentare – lucrarile din expozitie sint exemple despre cum artistii observa, reflecta, analizeaza si isi pun intrebari despre oras, urbanitate, locuire.<br /><br />O parte din proiectele expuse in cadrul evenimentelor din 2009 si 2010 de la Londra vor fi prezente si in expozitia de la Bucuresti, alaturi de contributii din partea arhitectilor, artistilor si cercetatorilor locali.<br /><br />2. CitiesMethodologies Talks (CMT) - dialoguri/colocvii, dedicate explorarii unor metodologii noi si inovative de cercetare urbana, in contextul oraselor post-comuniste, dar nu numai. Contributiile vor veni din arhitectura si urbanism, arte vizuale, antropologie, film documentar si literatura.<br /><br />In cadrul CMT, timp de doua zile, vizitatorii vor avea ocazia de a se intilni cu o parte din participantii romani si straini, care vor dialoga intre ei si cu vizitatorii despre metode si dinamica propriilor proiecte, vor participa la colocvii sau performance-uri.<br /><br />Credem ca este nevoie de noi forumuri pentru critica si schimbul reciproc intre metode diferite provenind din discipline variate, relevante pentru cercetarea urbana. In loc de a privi numai produsele finisate ale reprezentarii oraselor, vom privi si analiza felul in care cercetatorii si exploratorii urbani (arhitecti, artisti, antropologi si altii) isi fac alegerile practice (si suporta greselile) in procesul acumularii de date.<br /><br />3. CitiesMethodologies workshop (CMW) / Atelier interdisciplinar de explorare urbana - Temele workshopului: spatiu urban abandonat, proces si metode de lucru, visual si non-visual data. Workshop-ul a inclus intilniri si discutii cu invitati, seminarii, prezentari de proiecte etc.<br /><br />Desfasurare: 8 – 23 octombrie 2010, in cadrul UNAgaleria.<br /><br /><span>4. Because of the total absence of references from art history, the show resembles a contemporary version of Dürer’s 'Melencolia'. The space is enriched by a series of objects, each of them with a specific meaning and place (yes, like a rebus!): a large box, a collection of funnels, two pairs of wooden portals, a tripod, a cement bag and a mattress. The artist describes the deliberate assortment of odd things as “‘beautiful’ works. However un-political I might try to be, I think there is politics in everything and I think there is also a critical discourse in this exhibition.” Beauty is nothing without depth. At the same time, Nancă’s melancholia (he uses the word “poetic”) is an attempt to make something that elevates ordinary domestic life to an aesthetic Olympus: the common becomes precious. While many contemporary artists use such a strategy, Nancă envisions the life of such objects in space and their connection with the artistic genre of melancholia opens up new avenues and new channels for interpretations." E un instrument foarte dibaci pentru ca el are aceeasi consistenta precum Subiectul. Expozitia se numeste ‘the end of folklore’, fiind un proiect colaborativ al lui Maxim Dumitras, Lucian Muntean si Cosmin Nasui.<br /><br /><br />Sunt lucruri care odata cu integrarea Romaniei in UE sint pe cale sa dispara. Unul dintre ele este ritualul taierii porcului. Noile norme cu prevedere la sacrificarea animalelor obliga ca aceasta sa se desfasoare numai in abatoare.<br /><br />Cutitul de sacrificiu, paiele, lampa de gaz, peria de radacini, masina de carnati, nu-si mai gasesc rostul si pot disparea definitiv. Amintirile si comportamentele legate de sacrificiul porcului sunt foarte importante pentru populatia rurala.<br /><br />Porcul este un souvenir cultural, aproape o emblema a unei ciclice sarbatoriri autohtone a vietii. Selectia de imagini este o parte din contributia fotografului la proiectul RoArchive, initiat de Iosif Kiraly.<br /><br /><br />Traiesc intr-o tara care trece printr-un proces continuu si haotic de transformare, in care straturile diverselor perioade istorice se amesteca unele cu altele. Incerc sa observ modul in care diverse detalii intra in relatie unele cu altele, punand in discutie probleme de ordin social sau politic. Vreau sa investighez limita din ce in ce mai ambigua dintre local si global, dintre trecut, prezent si viitor.<br /><br />Incerc sa privesc peisajele industriale cu un ochi contemporan, sa imi dau seama care sunt elementele din imagine care spun mai multe despre aceasta perioada. Expozitia se numeste ‘youngsters’ si include lucrari de Bogdan Garbovan si Malina Ionescu.<br /><br /><br />Fotografia inregistreaza realitatea. Asta pare sa fie misiunea ei, inca de cand a aparut ca mediu. Ceva aproape stiintific o anima, o nevoie de a descoperi lumea, pana in cele mai mici detalii.<br /><br />O imagine pare sa fie dovada ultima. Iar aceasta afirmatie e o intreaga mitologie.<br /><br />Bogdan Garbovan si Malina Ionescu par sa fie de partea unui asemenea adevar. Amandoi cauta o anume obiectivitate, care e vizibila in metoda de a fotografia. This directory was put together to illustrate what makes it so special. A listing of 100 of the most talented artists in Romania today, from conceptual art to contemporary dance, literature and theatre to music and fashion, it’s a snapshot of an entire generation – the Romanian New Wave.<br /><br />When we started the “100 to Watch” project, we thought the biggest problem would be finding 100 people. I mean, justhow big can the scene in Romania be? We were even preparedto change the title – at one point we imagined that we’d haveto settle for something decidedly less impressive, along thelines of “43 to Watch”. However, in the end, our problemturned out to be exactly the opposite. Having convenedour jury, we were shocked to discover that our longlistnumbered more than 200 people. These weren’t people thathad been reluctantly suggested to bulk up the numbers, but hugely talented artists who demand wider recognition.<br /><br />Cutting down the longlist was a thankless task. Every member of the jury has dozens of names they desperatelywanted to see in the book, but who we simply couldn’t fit in.There were endless discussions and disagreements, and wedrew up our selection criteria again and again and again.<br /><br />So what are the selection criteria? When we started out on this project, we came up with a lot of contradictory answers. Wewanted to find people who had a degree of success abroad, butalso people who’d fallen under the radar at home. We wantedto respect the scene’s veterans, while supporting the kidssnapping at their heels. Acknowledging artistic risk-takingwas a big priority, while not shunning commercial success.<br /><br />We felt people still living and working in Romania should be prioritized, while not neglecting those who’ve managedto ‘go international’. Our one strict rule was that the artistsshould be under 40, but even this was disregarded on anumber of occasions, due to special pleading from our jury.<br /><br />In truth, no set of criteria could possibly capture what we were trying to do. How can you compare success in, say,film-making to a niche field like contemporary dance? Howcan you weigh up one artist’s potential against another’salready impressive CV? You can’t. In the end, whethersomeone got in or not came down to a single solitaryquestion – is the artist in question worth watching?<br /><br />The answer, for all the names compiled here, is are sounding ‘yes’. Every single artist between thesepages is part of the reason why Romania is such anexciting place to be right now. It’s indicative of just howmuch talent there is in the Romanian New Wave.<br /><br />And so, though this is in no way a definitive list, it’s our list. Hotly argued over and messy, idiosyncratic andpacked with surprises, it’s a real snapshot of the mostexciting generation ever to come out of the country. Expozitia se numeste ‘home alone’ si cuprinde o serie de obiecte si texte rezultate in urma interactiunii dintre public si teatrul Lorgean, imaginat si organizat de Jean-Lorin Sterian in propriul apartament.<br /><br /><br />Piesa de teatru incepe atunci cand te suna cineva. Afli adresa, data si ora la care trebuie sa fii acolo. Urci cu liftul dupa ce ai primit un bilet la schimb pentru obiectul pe care l-ai adus si care pentru tine simbolizeaza singuratatea.<br /><br />Apoi te asezi pe jos printre niste oameni pe care nu ii cunosti, pe intuneric. Lorin pune muzica si urmeaza un monolog. Cativa oameni se aseaza pe un scaun in fata ta si spun niste lucruri. Vorbesc intr-o limba colocviala, teatralitatea e diferita de la unul la altul. Se povestesc lucruri, se citesc conversatii de messenger, ai senzatia ca totul face parte din piesa. Si ezitarile si accidentele, pana si veioza din spatele scaunului de lemn care e singura lumina din camera.<br /><br />La final trebuie sa zici si tu ceva. Ai adus un obiect de acasa si acum trebuie sa spui de ce e legat de ideea de singuratate. Fara sa vrei, faci o confesiune, esti ascultat si asculti pe altii. Si peste cateva zile Lorin iti va scrie cerandu-ti sa ii trimiti un mic text cu povestea obiectului tau, amandoua urmand sa fie integrate intr-o expozitie.<br /><br />O serie de reprezentatii ale unui teatru de apartament si o expozitie de obiecte pot fi de fapt un experiment social. Daca simpla ta prezenta in public face parte dintr-un scenariu prestabilit care te va transforma la un moment dat in participant la reprezentatie, inseamna ca exista un cadru conceptual in care fara sa vrei ai fost prins.<br /><br />Esti victima unui creator de situatii care te va face, fara sa vrei, sa intelegi ca orice comportament cotidian poate fi vazut ca teatru. Iar odata ce vei privi obiectele si vei citi textele din expozitie vei zambi poate, pentru ca singuratatea nu e de fapt asa neagra cum ne pare tuturor in momentele in care suntem vulnerabili.<br /><br />A te simti singur devine a fi singur fara o incarcatura negativa. Expozitia se numeste ‘slightly bored’, fiind o expozitie de grup, ce cuprinde lucrari de Alina Samoschi, Dragos Platon si Claudiu Ciobanu.<br /><br /><br />Ne scaldam in plictiseala ca intr-o piscina mai mare. Fiecare din noi are cate un loc bine precizat. Cineva sta langa calculator. Altcineva e in picioare, langa xerox. Vorbim cu totii la telefon. Daca ne-ai intreba ce facem, cum ne simtim, am incerca poate sa facem lucrurile sa para un pic mai blande si am spune ca suntem usor plictisiti.<br /><br />Chiar si afara, imbracati in hainele noastre de firma, pozand cu zambetul pe buze. Si acolo stam cu totii in acelasi lichid. Apa inchide nuantele hainelor pana ce ele devin cu totul albe. Din ele ramane doar un contur.<br /><br />Superficiali si inutili, sau poate doar amuzati pana la suprafata, parem eleganti, ingandurati, profesionisti. Mediul predilect in care se manifesta Marius Bercea este pictura, insa pentru aceasta expozitie artistul experimenteaza medii neconventionale de exprimare cum ar fi desenul cu glet pe perete sau pirogravura pe lambriuri.<br />Arta lui Bercea se concentreaza in general pe ideea de amintire, iar tema acestei expozitii nu face exceptie. Desenul in glet pe perete reprezinta un peisaj diluat, vag, in care se citeste structura geometrica a unor scari care il traverseaza. Tonurile de gri pulverizate pe materia alb-galbuie a gletului dau un aspect de relicva imaginii.<br />Pirogravura pe lambriuri asamblata pe peretele opus desenului in glet infatiseaza un grup de personaje care se pozeaza in fata unui monument – un pretext pentru o fotografie de pus in albumul de familie. Cele doua imagini sunt contrastante, desenul in glet are tonuri modulate de gri si alb, iar imaginea din pirogravura are efecte de clar-obscur. Expozitia se numeste ‘games and toys’, fiind o expozitie de grup, ce cuprinde lucrari de Alina Andrei, Simion Cernica, Cuzina si Veda Popovici.<br /><br /><br />Si in anul 2000 noi nu vom mai fi copii. Parintii vor fi niste oameni aproape batrani, copilaria un loc indepartat pe care il poti descoperi aproape intact intr-o serie de diapozitive care nici macar nu iti apartin. Profesorii, jucariile, sporturile de performanta sunt toate acolo, undeva in spatele tau, ramase in urma.<br /><br />Peliculele fotografice au inregistrat momentul care acum e doar partial accesibil. Uniformele, steagurile si imaginea conducatorului reflecta nu atat puterea de convingere a povestii oficiale, cat candoarea unei copilarii reale, pe care doar cei nascuti in anii ’80 in Romania, sau mai inainte, o pot simti cu adevarat.<br /><br />Poate ca vom fi un fel de oameni mari, care in timpul liber se joaca de-a fotografia. Sau mai degraba, vom juca feste spiritului prafuit al gesturilor-cliseu produse de oamenii din cluburile fotografice. Ne vom gandi iarasi la spontaneitate si vom rade cu dezinvoltura de altii.<br /><br />Sau vom fi niste oameni mari care poarta ochelari. In lentile, mereu imagini nostalgice, pe jumatate mincinoase, care acopera si deformeaza prezentul. Si uneori, din plictiseala, senzatia ca totul s-a mai facut.<br /><br /><br />Young Romanian Art este proiectul de rezidenta al lui Mircea Nicolae, organizatorul si curatorul celor 14 expozitii din perioada iulie - octombrie 2009. Aceasta serie de expozitii cu durata de o saptamana urmareste promovarea artei tinere romanesti in timpul Bienalei de Arta de la Venetia 2009.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
